A lot of high-powered consultants held forth at the most recent town hall on jets at the Island airport (Sept. 9, Metro Hall), but most of it was technocratic tedium, irrelevant to the main issue: the destruction of a city. It was left to an 84-year-old member of the audience to put the main case. The lake and the Island were a key part of our civic culture, he said, a part of what made Toronto Toronto. Asking Torontonians to host jets on the Island was akin to asking New Yorkers to host towers in Central Park. They’d just say no, and so should we.
