Nice Scenery

I’d love to see how The Great Beauty would play out if it were re-cast as a working-class drama. Shorn of all its Roman high-life, its fabulous vistas, beautiful women, secret art collections. A single, childless, loveless 65-year-old wonders what life’s all about – but instead of a linen-suited devotee of la dolce vita he’s a retired coal miner or a penniless pensioner. Would anyone wonder or care? (And by the way, what’s the “trick” referred to in the closing scene? Is life a trick or art or both?)
